About the Service

What is the Nightjet train?

The Nightjet is ÖBB's (Österreichische Bundesbahnen — Austrian Federal Railways) flagship overnight train network. Launched under the Nightjet brand in December 2016 when ÖBB took over Deutsche Bahn's City Night Line services, it has grown into Europe's largest overnight rail operator, connecting over 27 destinations across 13 countries.

Unlike daytime high-speed trains, the Nightjet turns travel time into rest time — trains depart in the evening and arrive the following morning, saving passengers the cost and hassle of overnight accommodation, airport transfers, and early check-ins. ÖBB is investing heavily in a completely new Nightjet fleet, with modern Siemens-built carriages entering service from 2023, offering improved comfort, accessibility, and connectivity.

The New Nightjet Fleet

ÖBB placed an initial order for 13 new Nightjet trainsets from Siemens Mobility in 2018, followed by 20 more in August 2021. In July 2025, the order was revised to 24 units as ÖBB rebalanced its fleet priorities. The new trains entered revenue service in December 2023, featuring en-suite shower rooms in premium sleeper cabins, 4-berth couchette compartments with mini-suites for solo travellers, and a top speed of 230 km/h.

Sustainable Travel Choice

Overnight rail travel produces dramatically lower CO₂ emissions per passenger than flying. ÖBB and Austria's Federal Ministry for Climate Action have stated that travelling with Nightjet is around 50 times more climate-friendly than the equivalent flight — a key reason demand for night trains is growing across Europe.

Operated by ÖBB

All Nightjet services are operated by ÖBB — Österreichische Bundesbahnen — Austria's state railway company, founded in 1923. ÖBB recorded over 550 million passengers in 2024, a record figure, and with a punctuality rate of around 97% is consistently rated among Europe's most reliable railway operators.

I boarded in Vienna after dinner, woke up to morning light over Hamburg's canals. A full night's sleep and a new city — for less than a hotel room. I won't fly this route again.

On Board

Nightjet train onboard amenities & services

Nightjet is designed for a comfortable overnight experience. Here's what you'll find on board — note that availability may vary between older and new-fleet trains.

WiFi Connectivity

The new Siemens-built Nightjet fleet features passenger WiFi throughout the train. Older rolling stock on legacy routes may not have WiFi — always check your specific service when booking.

Bistro & Refreshments

Most Nightjet trains have a bistro or minibar service available during the evening. Sleeper cabin passengers receive breakfast included in their ticket — typically a small tray delivered to the cabin.

Power Sockets

Power sockets (European standard, 220V) are available in sleeper cabins. On couchette carriages, sockets may be shared at corridor level. The new fleet provides more widespread charging access.

Family Compartments

Families can request adjacent berths or entire couchette compartments to travel together. Children aged 0–5 travel free when sharing a berth with a paying adult. Reduced fares apply for children aged 6–14.

Accessibility

Nightjet provides wheelchair-accessible seating and assistance services at major stations. Passengers with reduced mobility should contact ÖBB or their booking provider in advance to ensure appropriate arrangements.

Bicycle Transport

Bicycles can be transported in a dedicated luggage carriage on most Nightjet routes, but must be booked in advance as space is limited. Folding bikes stored in a bag travel as carry-on luggage at no extra charge.

Luggage Storage

Each accommodation type has allocated luggage storage — overhead racks in seating cars, under-berth storage in couchettes, and dedicated luggage areas in sleeper cabins. Large items can go in the luggage van.

Attendant Service

Sleeper cabin passengers are attended by a dedicated train attendant who assists with boarding, prepares beds, delivers breakfast, and provides a wake-up call before arrival at your destination.

What is the Nightjet train?

The Nightjet is ÖBB's (Austrian Federal Railways) overnight train network, Europe's largest. Launched under the Nightjet brand in December 2016, it connects over 27 destinations across 13+ countries including Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and beyond. Trains depart in the evening and arrive the following morning, turning travel time into rest time. Book your Nightjet tickets here.

What accommodation types does Nightjet offer?

Nightjet offers three accommodation types: Seat — reclining seats in open carriages, the most affordable option; Couchette — berths in shared 4-berth compartments or mini-suite capsules (new fleet) with pillow, blanket, and sheet included; and Sleeper Cabin — private lockable cabins for 1–3 passengers with full horizontal beds, breakfast included, and en-suite shower rooms on the new ÖBB fleet.

How fast does the Nightjet travel?

Nightjet is not a high-speed train — it is an overnight service designed for comfort and range rather than maximum speed. Trains typically cruise at 100–160 km/h depending on the line and country. Journey times range from around 8 hours (shorter routes) to 15–16 hours on longer international runs such as Vienna to Brussels or Amsterdam.

Do Nightjet trains have WiFi?

WiFi availability depends on the train. The new Nightjet fleet built by Siemens Mobility (entering service from 2023 onwards) is equipped with passenger WiFi. Older carriages on legacy routes may not have WiFi. When booking, check the specific rolling stock assigned to your service for the most up-to-date information.

Is a reservation mandatory on Nightjet?

Yes — a seat or berth reservation is mandatory on all Nightjet services. You cannot simply board with a rail pass or open ticket. Eurail and Interrail passholders must purchase a Nightjet reservation supplement (at a reduced rate compared to full ticket prices) to guarantee their chosen accommodation type. Reservations are especially important as sleeper cabins and couchettes often sell out weeks in advance on popular routes.

Can children travel on Nightjet?

Yes. Children aged 0–5 travel free on Nightjet when accompanied by a paying adult and sharing the same berth. Children aged 6–14 are entitled to reduced fares. Families can request adjacent berths or entire couchette compartments to ensure everyone is together. For sleeper cabins, a cabin can accommodate up to 3 passengers, making it suitable for a family of three.

Can I bring my bicycle on Nightjet?

Bicycle transport is available on most Nightjet routes in a dedicated luggage carriage, but must be booked and paid for separately in advance — spaces are very limited and cannot be reserved on the day of travel. Folding bicycles that are fully folded and stored in a protective bag can be carried as regular luggage at no extra charge.

Are Eurail and Interrail passes valid on Nightjet?

Yes, both Eurail and Interrail passes are accepted on Nightjet trains. However, passholders must still book and pay a mandatory reservation supplement to secure their berth. The supplement fee is considerably lower than a full ticket, making pass + reservation excellent value — especially for longer routes or multiple journeys. Book early as berths sell out quickly.
